Here is the music on our students’ playlists right now ...

Billy Law King-fung, 16, Fanling Rhenish Church Secondary School: “Miracle Shopping” which is the theme song of Don Don Donki, a famous Japanese retail chain. Recently, after studying, I would go shopping in the Donki nearby. Whenever I go in, I hear the catchy lyrics and melody. The funny thing is, when this song is playing, I sometimes hear the customers next to me singing along.

Pazu Leong Wai-fung, 17, Ma On Shan Tsung Tsin Secondary School: “Wake Me up When September Ends” by Green Day, an American band that anyone who plays the guitar should know. This particular song is also a must-learn song for almost all guitarists. It’s my final year in secondary school and listening to this song brings back so much nostalgia since this was the first song I learned on a guitar back in Form Four. With lyrics like “Summer has come and passed” and “Seven years has gone so fast”, this song highlights the emotions of leaving school and everyone I have been playing with for the past six years.

Zoe Zhen Ying-yi, 17, Fanling Rhenish Church Secondary School: “God of Music” by K-pop boy band Seventeen. Every time I listen to this song, it gives me energy for the entire day. The lyrics revolve around the power that music has to bring people together as a universal language. It emphasises that even if we’ve just met, we can use music to communicate and form a strong connection. The strong rhythm and energetic melody of this song make it truly captivating. The impactful message and the song’s power led to the band being invited by Unesco, the UN’s heritage body to deliver a speech and perform.

Lucinda Wong Lok-nam, 14, Hong Kong Pooi To Middle School: “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. This song is about learning to let go of other people’s opinions and living your own life. It encourages me to keep going and have faith. Music can be a great source of comfort and motivation when I’m feeling down. I love listening to it to let go of my negative feelings. It’s just like Taylor is sitting next to me, cheering me up.

What childhood film or show has been ruined for you?

Au Chung-hin, 17, Fanling Rhenish Church Secondary School: I have been listening to “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, especially when I feel upset and hopeless. This song always helps to relieve my emotions. The lyrics, “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you,” are powerful and remind me to stay loyal to what I believe in. I know someone will always be there for me and never give up on me.

Siu Yiu, 15, Shun Tak Fraternal Association Seaward Woo College: I’ve been listening to the song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by American singer Mariah Carey since the start of November. The reason is very simple – it is Christmas soon! The song is a classic that I loop every year in the festive season as I love its joyful vibe and lyrics that always cheer me up.

Keith Kuang Chun-hei, 17, TWGHs Li Ka Shing College: “Trying My Best” by American singer Anson Seabra. This song creates a chill vibe and makes me feel relaxed. The lyrics are also encouraging and meaningful. Besides, I fully relate to the title of the song because all of us are trying our best in our daily lives in whatever we are doing.

Lo Lok-tung, 13, CNEC Christian College: “A Million Dreams” from the movie The Greatest Showman is the song that I have been listening to over and over these days because of its catchy melody, lyrics and rhythm. “A million dreams is all it’s gonna take” is my favourite line of this song. It means that all our dreams will eventually come true. Work hard for your dreams, and do not be afraid of the tests that come with the goal and practice bravely without hesitation.

From Darth Vader to Gru, students tell us the best fictional villains

Man Chun-mei, 11, Immaculate Heart of Mary College: “OMG” by K-pop girl group NewJeans. The singers keep repeating the lyrics, and this creates a predictable pattern which gives me a soothing effect and a sense of stability. Also, the repetitive lyrics help me focus on the present moment. By consciously listening and following along, I can enter a state of mindfulness, which helps me feel relaxed.

Joyce Chan Tsz-kiu, 12, Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College: “Don’t Wanna Know” by American pop rock band Maroon 5. This song is about a person who wants to forget bad memories about someone or something, and the lyrics remind us to move on and be positive. With its attractive melody and catchy lyrics, it is a happy song.
