Recap by phillip woo

Following a box-seat run, Lovero just scrambled home after hitting the front 150m out for a first win at his fifth local start. He lived up to his recent second when he stepped down in grade to try the Valley 1,650m, but will need to raise his game next start in Class Three. Post-time favourite Sturdy Ruby dashed well along the inside to finish a close second after a patient ride two from the rear. He keeps promising without delivering, but it was his best effort to date from 10 starts. Win Win Fighter dashed well to finish a close third after making his run five back on the fence. It was another good effort following a win. Early favourite Dragon Star kept on reasonably well to just hold fourth after stalking the pace. He's better when allowed to bowl along in front. Galvanic ran on steadily to just miss the frame after settling on the rail in midfield. He went OK trying the 1,650m for the first time. Kasa Papa weaved near the inside to finish next best after biding his time three from the rear. Gallant Crown had nothing left in the tank over the last 100m after clearing to the lead 1,400m out.

MERCHANT PRINCE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who, after the necessary consultations, said the horse was suitable to race.

When questioned, M L Yeung stated that from an inside barrier he was asked to ride MERCHANT PRINCE in a forward position and as a result after jumping awkwardly, he rode his mount along in accordance with his instructions.

He said throughout the event MERCHANT PRINCE did not travel strongly and he had some concern with its action as it became unbalanced at various stages of the event.

He added that on pulling up he also expressed concern with his mount's action.

Trainer R Richards confirmed that from an inside barrier he had asked Jockey Yeung to take up a forward position.

He said whilst MERCHANT PRINCE had received some farrier treatment in the lead up to tonight's race, he was satisfied with its pre-race condition prior to the event.
