Recap by phillip woo

Rising From Ashes showed a good turn of foot to just get up after a patient ride second last for a second win and first over the Valley 1,650m from 12 local starts. He had been knocking on the door in three of four prior starts this term. Favourite Jumbo Legend finished well near the outside from behind midfield to make it close on the wire. He continued to shine brightly over this course despite going up in trip. Master Tornado would not go down without a fight after finding the front from gate one with bags of money for him late. He relished a rise in distance and better draw after getting no favours from wide draws in his first three starts. Zone D ran on to finish next best after a rail run from midfield. It was another honest effort. Happy Daily ran on without threatening down the outside after making his run five back and one off the fence. Amazing One Plus had his chance after jumping alertly to hold a spot in the box seat. The big weight took its toll. Silver Hammer stayed on along the inside from towards the rear. He went a shade better with a step up in distance but is still acclimatising.

Racing Incident Report

Race Seven: (346) - CONNAUGHT HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1650Meters

JUMBO LEGEND got its head up on jumping and then shortly after the start raced tight between GALLANT CROWN and SAMARKAND which shifted out.

HAPPY DAILY shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of THE RUNNER.

HAPPY DAILY was then steadied and shifted across behind runners.

RISING FROM ASHES shifted in on jumping, resulting in SILVER HAMMER being crowded for room outside THE RUNNER.

SILVER HAMMER and RISING FROM ASHES were then shifted across behind runners in the early stages from wide barriers.

POWERFUL WINGS was steadied at the start from the outside barrier and shifted across behind runners to obtain a position closer to the rail.

Approaching the 700 Metres, DYNAMIC SPIRIT commenced to prove very difficult to settle and improved quickly to be racing close to the heels of SAMARKAND which resulted in DYNAMIC SPIRIT having to be checked away from the heels of that horse and shifting out and in doing so bumping HAPPY DAILY.

Passing the 200 Metres, DYNAMIC SPIRIT was steadied away from the heels of RISING FROM ASHES (L Hewitson) which shifted out.

L Hewitson was reprimanded and told to ensure that he exercises due care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

When questioned, H Bowman stated that due to the manner in which DYNAMIC SPIRIT over-raced in the lead at its most recent start, he was asked to ensure that the horse relaxed as much as possible in tonight's race.

He said therefore it was decided not to ride DYNAMIC SPIRIT along in the early stages to obtain a forward position but to find cover on the horse in the hope that this would assist DYNAMIC SPIRIT in settling in the early and middle stages and then being able to finish race off.

He said after being steadied on jumping and obtaining a position in about midfield behind ZONE D, DYNAMIC SPIRIT again travelled keenly in the middle stages and particularly after the 700 Metres.

He added after shifting to the inside of GALLANT CROWN in the early part of the Straight, DYNAMIC SPIRIT lost momentum when steadied near the 200 Metres.

He said whilst DYNAMIC SPIRIT was not travelling well enough to be amongst the placings, he was of the opinion that had the horse not have lost momentum at this time, it would have finished closer than it did.

A veterinary inspection of DYNAMIC SPIRIT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

When questioned, M L Yeung stated that it was hoped that THE RUNNER would be able to obtain a position behind the speed with cover as horses tonight did not appear to be favoured by racing in or around the lead.

He said in accordance with his instructions he shifted his mount across approaching the winning post on the first occasion, however, was left racing wide and without cover after the 1200 Metres.

He said although the race was being run at a slow tempo after the 1200 Metres, he was reluctant to make use of his mount to improve forward of GALLANT CROWN and race outside the lead as he believed he would have had to ride his mount along to do so.

He added as THE RUNNER was balanced and travelling comfortably, he believed that the horse's best chance of finishing the race off was to remain racing three wide and without cover rather than being used up and then not being able to finish the race off in the Straight.

A veterinary inspection of GALLANT CROWN and POWERFUL WINGS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

RISING FROM ASHES and JUMBO LEGEND were sent for sampling.
