  • Covid-19 impact on Badminton World Federation calendar essentially confirmed 26-year-old’s place in May
Hong Kong badminton star Angus Ng Ka-long is the latest athlete to celebrate qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but the shuttler says this is only the start.
Writing in a post on Instagram, the world No 8 told of his pride at a second Games appearance following his debut in Rio in 2016.
“I am so proud to announce that I am qualified for my 2nd Olympics, Tokyo 2020,” Ng wrote.

“It’s just the first part of the mission, the more important thing is coming in late July.”

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics begin on July 23 in the Japanese capital after a year’s delay because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Qualifying for the badminton technically ends on Tuesday, June 15, but Ng is assured of Hong Kong’s sole spot in the men’s singles.

However, the Badminton World Federation called off all tournaments on May 28 meaning the standings have been effectively confirmed since then.

Other players may yet make the cut if any of the qualifiers pull out.

Ng returned to the court in January after 10 months off because of the pandemic.
