Jeremy Lin poured in 23 points but it was younger brother Joseph who had the last laugh on an emotional night, when the Lin siblings went head-to-head for the first time in their professional careers on Tuesday.

Joseph Lin’s league leading New Taipei Kings thrashed his older brother’s Kaohsiung 17LIVE Steelers 101-88 at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, as mum Shirley Lin watched on.

After coming out on top, Joseph Lin, who had 10 points and 10 assists, said the pair had grown up imagining they would play together one day, and it had been a “dream come true”.

Jeremy Lin, who played nine seasons in the NBA and won a championship with Toronto Raptors, said he had texted his brother before the game remembering how we “were always underestimated growing up”.

“Being able to play in this arena and witnessing how you all supported Joseph is emotional,” the 34-year-old told fans afterwards.

Coming off a three-game winning streak, the home team opened up a 16-6 lead inside the first four minutes, before Jeremy Lin took control in 10-0 run that squared matters at 16-16

Still in at 44-44 at half-time, the Steelers were outplayed in the third quarter with missed shots and turnovers, and the Kings opened up a 12-point lead entering the final period.

That advantage ballooned to 20 points in less than two minutes with another 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter, and the Kings extended their P League+ winning streak to four games.

After the match, Jeremy took time to praise his younger brother and said he was “underrated” in front of a 6,540 sell-out crowd.

“A lot of people did not see his greatness, he had the best efficiency rating in the league for three straight seasons,” Lin said. “Joseph is such a model player in every aspect, he is so unselfish that he sacrificed [his own statistics] to help his teammates flourish.”

The Steelers and the Kings will meet three more times during the remaining regular season, with games in Taipei on April 16 and 30, either side of a match at the Steelers’ Fengsham Arena on April 23.

“There are really too many emotions playing against my brother,” Jeremy Lin said. “It was a difficult day with such emotions.

“For the rest of the games, it is the same as we are both professional players, we just do our best for our team.”
