A Hong Kong resident has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman at a hotel in Causeway Bay.

Police said they received a report on Wednesday morning that a 19-year-old woman had been raped in a hotel room at the Regal Hongkong Hotel on Yee Wo Street.

Officers investigating the matter subsequently detained a 35-year-old man from Liberia, who holds a Hong Kong identity card.

Two suspected marijuana cigarettes were also discovered in his possession, the force said.

The man and woman had become friends during a social gathering earlier this month, according to a police source.

On Tuesday, the woman had agreed to meet the suspect at the hotel.

The pair were chatting at the location before the alleged rape occurred at about 10.40pm.

The woman’s friend later alerted police.

Officers from the Wan Chai district crime squad are investigating the case.
