Hong Kong police search for 10 assailants over attack on suspected triad member

  • Insiders say gang confronted five Wo Shing Wo triad members in car park in Sheung Shui, with at least one assailant wielding a knife
  • Gang assaults victim after he trips and falls when trying to flee, while his four friends escape unharmed
Hong Kong police are searching for at least 10 assailants in connection with an attack on a suspected triad member who was beaten after he tripped and fell while trying to escape.

A source familiar with the case said on Wednesday that four of the victim’s friends managed to escape unscathed during the attack in an outdoor car park outside Ching Ho Estate in Sheung Shui.

The 23-year-old victim and his friends, all men aged between 19 and 24, were chatting together when the assailants confronted them at around 11.10pm on Tuesday.

The insider said an initial investigation showed two people scouted the area earlier to confirm the group’s presence, leaving just moments before two cars pulled up.

“Nine assailants jumped out from the two vehicles and approached the five victims. At least one of the perpetrators was seen wielding a knife,” he said.

“The five men fled on foot, but one of them tripped and was then assaulted by the gang.”

The victim suffered injuries to his head and limbs. He was taken to North District Hospital in Sheung Shui for treatment.

Police searched the area but made no arrests.

Another source said the victim and his friends were suspected Wo Shing Wo triad members.

“A preliminary investigation suggested the assailants mainly targeted the victim’s limbs in an apparent move to teach him a lesson rather than an attempt to cause fatal harm,” he said.

Detectives from the Tai Po criminal investigation unit are following up on the case.

In a separate attack, five men assaulted a 16-year-old suspected triad member on Hillwood Road in Tsim Sha Tsui at around 2.24am on Wednesday, slashing his right arm and leg with a knife.

Police said the assailants, all wearing black, fled in a car.

The injured teenager was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment.

Police handled 2,334 reports of triad-related crimes last year, down 8.6 per cent from 2,554 cases logged in 2022.
