Rain predicted for Hong Kong for most of week, Observatory forecasters say

  • Cool and rainy most days this week with possibility of thunderstorms at times, Observatory predicts
  • Tuesday predicted to be clear and pleasant, but weather expected to deteriorate towards end of week

Hong Kong can expect cool and mostly rainy days this week, with the possibility of thunderstorms because of the influence of upper air disturbances, the city’s forecaster has said.

The weather has fluctuated in recent days with the city blanketed in fog last Wednesday as relative humidity hit 100 per cent and temperatures reached 26 degrees Celsius.

The Observatory said the influence of a strong northeast monsoon on Sunday meant temperatures in urban areas remained cool, ranging from 15 to 16 degrees (59 to 60.8 Fahrenheit) during the day and one or two degrees lower in some areas in the evening.

The lowest recorded temperature was about 10 degrees at Tate’s Cairn and Ngong Ping in Lantau. The weather was cloudy with occasional patches of rain.

Rainfall of about 5mm (0.1 inches) was recorded across most parts of the city.

A rain belt associated with an upper-air disturbance is expected to hit the coast of Guangdong on Monday, resulting in more frequent rain.

The city and coastal Guangdong will have rain with a chance of thunderstorms.

As the upper-air disturbances move away, Tuesday was predicted to be clear and pleasant.

But, with the arrival of a fresh to strong easterly airstream, the middle and latter part of the week may have cloudier conditions, with occasional patches of rain along the coast of Guangdong.

Sunday night and Monday will be cool and cloudy with rain. In urban areas, the minimum temperature on Monday will be around 15 degrees and slightly lower in the New Territories.

The maximum temperature will be about 17 degrees.

Tuesday is expected to be mainly fine, although the morning is predicted to be cool.

It will become windier with occasional patches of rain towards the end of the week.
