Too humid to handle: Hongkongers wake up to damp buildings, slippery floors amid muggy weather

  • Hong Kong Observatory says weather humid and warm on Tuesday, with sunny intervals expected during day
  • Temperatures expected to fall to as low as 16 degrees Celsius later this week thanks to fresh to strong northeast monsoon

Hongkongers woke up to damp buildings and slippery floors as the city’s relative humidity reached 100 per cent on Tuesday, with the forecaster expecting the slightly warmer temperatures to fall to as low as 16 degrees Celsius (60.8 Fahrenheit) later this week.

“Under the influence of a southerly airstream, the weather is very humid today. The visibility in the morning was only around 1,000 to 2,000 metres [3,280 to 6,560 feet],” said Dr Ng Yin-lam, a scientific officer at the Hong Kong Observatory.

“The temperature has become warmer, reaching 22 and 23 degrees Celsius in most parts of the territory as of 6am, which is four to five degrees higher than yesterday.”

Surprised by the high humidity, many internet users posted photos of their corridors and lift lobbies on social media, showing water droplets forming on the surfaces of ceilings and walls, as well as damp and slippery floors.

The weather is set to be humid and warm throughout Tuesday. Sunny intervals are expected during the day but the night will be misty and cloudy, with one or two light rain patches.

A fresh to strong northeast monsoon arriving on the coast of southern China on Wednesday will bring cool weather in the coming few days.

The weather will still be humid at first on Wednesday, but winds will become northerlies and temperatures will begin to fall later, especially in the early morning and at night.

From Thursday to next Monday, the temperature will range between 16 and 20 degrees. The weather will remain cloudy, with a few rain patches over the weekend.

An upper-air disturbance is expected to bring unsettled weather to Guangdong province early next week.
