Remember the adorable little girl Lily that Charlotte York and Harry Goldenblatt adopted in Sex and the City? Well she’s all grown up, as we learned when HBO’s hit series (and SATC spin-off) And Just Like That introduced us to her teenage incarnation, played by breakout star Cathy Ang, in 2021.

In the show, Lily has a grown up wardrobe – possibly taking cues from her mum and her famous friends – and looks fabulous in Oscar de la Renta, Miu Miu, Zimmerman, Staud and Chanel. As one of the few Asian faces to join the franchise, long-time fans have watched Ang’s character grow up over the years, though she’s been played by different girls to reflect her age.

And now, after wrapping up its second season this summer, And Just Like That has been confirmed for a third season, according to its creators, meaning we can only hope for more Lily on TV.

So who’s the talented newbie that plays her?

Cathy Ang was born in January 1996 in the US state of Iowa to Chinese-Filipino immigrant parents, according to Vogue. Although they moved from the Philippines, Ang told the publication that “at home, we are very culturally Chinese”.

Ang plays the teen version of Charlotte and Harry’s adopted daughter Lily in the series. Despite being 27 years old, she convincingly embodies the essence of a teenager. As one of the fresher and younger faces in the cast, Ang confessed to Vogue that she regularly felt “star-struck” on set alongside actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis.

“Being able to stand in a room full of women who have been doing this for so long and truly understand the craft – they are aware of every camera movement – is just incredible,” she told the publication.

Her other acting gigs are equally impressive

Ang is relatively new to the industry, completing her first film just five years ago when she lent her voice to the main animated character in Age of Sail.

She’s since acted in episodes of Ramy, The Blessing, and My Best Friend’s Exorcism, and was cast alongside fellow Asian-American stars John Cho, Sandra Oh and Ken Jeong for Netflix’s animated musical Over the Moon.

It’s not just acting that Ang is known for. According to W magazine, this rising star studied music at New York University, with a focus on vocals. “I’m Chinese Filipino and because of our Filipino heritage, we had karaoke at every single party and my whole family sings,” she told the magazine. Although she says piano is not her “forte”, she said that her recital scene in the opening episode of season one of AJLT was “such a fun challenge” to film.

Luckily for Ang, she got the chance to show off her singing abilities in season two of the show, and in the Oscar-nominated film Over the Moon.

She stands up against anti-Asian hate

Ang, like many Asian-American actors, is not afraid to speak up against anti-Asian hate. Last year, she wrote an opinion piece for Harper’s Bazaar in which she outlined her experiences with racial abuse and how she wants to change the way Asian women are represented.

“I was lucky enough to grow up with many other Asian-Americans, but it wasn’t enough to shield us from judgment and ridicule about our food, or our parents’ accents. I gave up on learning Tagalog, complained about Chinese school, and was wary of the kids labelled ‘FOBs’ (Fresh off the Boats),” she wrote. She said that to move forward, it “starts with diverse and authentic representation, to provide role models for the next generation of women”.
