With his boyish smile and suave demeanour, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been making the world swoon ever since his 2010 breakthrough role as Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC television drama series Sherlock.

The 76th Golden Globe Awards took place today, and we were so disappointed to see that he did not win the award for best performance by an actor for his role as Patrick Melrose in the eponymous five-part drama miniseries.

As we console him in spirit, while sitting at our desks, we’re also going to take a look at five reasons he’s so beloved by everyone here at STYLE.

1. He is ‘the thinking man’s/woman’s crumpet’

In case you don’t know what that means, it’s a way to refer to someone who is popular because of their intelligence and their physical attractiveness. After a quick survey of the STYLE team, we are 100 per cent in agreement that, with his brains and looks, combined with his sexy English accent (while reading us bedtime stories), Cumberbatch can be our delicious crumpet snack any day.

2. What didn’t kill him made him stronger ...

In 2005, Cumberbatch and two of his friends were abducted on a trip to South Africa. After their car suffered a puncture, they were held at gunpoint by a group of locals, who then drove them to a random location before setting them free unharmed without any explanation. Cumberbatch said that the incident “taught me that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own. It’s made me want to live a life less ordinary.” Well, Mr Cumberbatch is indeed extraordinary.

3. #CoupleGoals

Cumberbatch is married to English theatre and opera director Sophie Hunter. They had been friends for 17 years before getting engaged in 2014. They were married on Valentine’s Day in 2015. The couple have two sons – and a third baby on the way! Super cute, right?

4. He’s not only a superhero (Marvel’s Doctor Strange) on screen, but also in real life

As our gallant Cumberbatch was riding in an Uber car along a street in London, he spotted a Deliveroo delivery bike rider being surrounded by some guys and immediately jumped from his car to intervene. The event went viral almost immediately, but not only is he modest while describing himself, he also puts the primary focus on the safety of the rider. Can our hero be more adorable?

5. His performance in ‘Patrick Melrose’ swept us off our feet

At this year’s Golden Globes ceremony held in Beverly Hills, California, he was passed up for the award for best performance by an actor for portraying the self-proclaimed “narcissistic, schizoid, suicidal alcoholic” Patrick Melrose. This much more emotional character (in comparison with his roles as Doctor Strange or Sherlock Holmes) really helped to showcase his wide-ranging acting abilities – and we definitely fell more in love with him after watching it.
