Christmas and the New Year is a time for celebrations – and Hong Kong’s best bars and restaurants always rise to the occasion. Whether it’s that classic seasonal drink that you’ve been waiting all year for or an inventive original creation that you’re craving, there is something for everyone.

Barcode

There’s always a danger of one too many chocolates over the festive period and Singular Concepts – the people behind bars like The Daily Tot, Tell Camellia and Bianco & Rosso, among others – are taking this risk to the extreme this Christmas with a special Willy Wonka-themed drinks menu across their portfolio. Our pick of the bunch, though, is Barcode’s Oompa Loompa Martini (HK$118), a colourful combination of vodka, Frutips “blackcurrant” sweets, guava and lemon that bursts with flavour.

DarkSide

Between its always-inventive cocktail menus, live jazz music and terrace overlooking Victoria Harbour, there are few places better to unwind than DarkSide. Heralded as one of the top 10 bars in Asia and a top 50 bar worldwide by the judges of the annual 50 Best awards, the Rosewood’s premier bar never disappoints when it comes to drinks. For Christmas they have prepared a special “All The Way” mulled wine (HK$170) loaded with aromatic spices that should prove the perfect winter warmer.

The Hari

The Terrace at The Hari is one of Wan Chai’s best kept secrets, a verdant hideaway that feels far removed from Lockhart Road just two floors down. With the cooler weather that visits the city during winter, The Terrace is an ideal spot for a tipple or two. There’s mulled wine for anyone who might be feeling chilly as well as seasonal cocktail Dear Friend Santa, which blends sake, grapefruit and a mulled wine extract to create something familiar yet different.

Hue

Located right on the harbourfront, Hue is a great spot for a meal or a drink anytime of the year. The self-styled modern Australian restaurant is offering a plethora of dining options over Christmas but hasn’t neglected to craft something special to drink either. The mulled wine champagne spritz (HK$120) is made with spiced red wine topped with a house-made prosecco form and garnished with star aniseed and raspberry dust.

Kakure

The Japanese may have some unusual festive traditions, like their love for KFC come Christmas, but Ginza-style drinking den Kakure is keeping things classic this year. Tucked away inside Landmark Prince’s in Central, the bar team are serving an eggnog (HK$120) with a twist. Instead of the more traditional brandy or bourbon, they have opted for cognac for a slightly spicier flavour – something enhanced by the intriguing addition of ginger to the mix.

LPM

Rather than celebrate the overindulgence typical of the season, LPM seeks to celebrate the spirit of togetherness with its “Greetings for our Friends” cocktail menu. Inspired by French artist and writer Jean Cocteau, the most spectacular of the menu’s four special drinks is the Madeleine 1957. The concoction is decanted from ceramic pots of the sort Cocteau loved and marries Rémy Martin VSOP with the sweet flavours of coconut and salted caramel and Angostura Bitters – a comment on the often bittersweet nature of life.

Sevva

A go-to destination for many a celebration, Sevva has created not one but two Christmas cocktails this year. First, the dazzling Golden Cup, an inviting tropical combination of rum and creme de coco with a dash of lime, garnished with mint and pomegranate, served in a suitably ostentatious golden bowl. If you’re bored of the usual Christmas palette put in an order for one No More Blues, a luminescent mix of blue Curacao, rum, and pineapple and coconut juice that is sure to be one of the Insta hits of the season.

An often overlooked gem, the Sheraton Hong Kong’s Sky Lounge offers some of the best views of the Island skyline – making it perfect for a nighttime tipple. Promising guests a “Merrilicious Christmas” this year, the Sky Lounge team have crafted a pair of presents for guests. The Santa’s Hat (HK$168) is their wintry spin on a frozen Margarita featuring a mix of Olmeca Tequila Blanco, Cointreau, cranberry juice, lime juice, grenadine, rosemary and fresh cranberries as garnish.
