When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry quietly moved to California in March 2020 during the start of the pandemic, little did we know the controversial royal couple would make Tinseltown their “forever home”.

And while they largely keep a low profile, the pair are often spotted grabbing a bite to eat at some of their favourite restaurants in Los Angeles and beyond. Because no matter how famous you are, you still get cravings for your favourite dishes.

1. Terroni

Located in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles near the famous farmers’ market, Terroni serves up delicious southern Italian fare. Opened in February 2020, this little spot became a vital neighbourhood grocery, serving prepared meals to its loyal customers when restaurants were forced to close during the pandemic.

Meghan has been a long-time customer of the brand and its food, going as far back as her pre-royal Suits days when she became a regular at Terroni’s Toronto location. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she gushed about its famous spicy condiment peperoncini piccanti (red chillies in oil), saying, “They’re really hot, but if you’re good with heat, then I think they’re going to be your new favourite thing.”

Situated on the corner of Melrose Avenue and Robertson Boulevard, Cecconi’s West Hollywood is a modern-day classic Italian restaurant regularly frequented by Meghan and Harry, per Hello! magazine. Serving simple, handmade dishes using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, the unassuming restaurant has an elegant, retro Roman setting with outdoor seating. Harry has also dropped by without Meghan, dining at the Italian restaurant with some friends in March 2022, per the same source.

3. Bettina

Specialising in naturally leavened, wood-fired pizzas and simple dishes influenced by the husband-and-wife owners’ travels to Italy, Bettina is yet another Italian favourite frequented by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. (They must really like Italian.) The royal couple has been known to order takeaway pizzas from the Montecito Country Mart eatery in the past and Meghan has also dined inside the restaurant with friends during a night out, People magazine reported.

Following King Charles’ coronation last year, Harry headed back to California where he was spotted on a sushi date with Meghan at Sushi by Scratch, formerly known as Sushi Bar Montecito. Headed up by Chef Phillip Frankland Lee, the omakase restaurant serves 17 courses of sushi to diners, per its website.
And it’s not just the Sussexes that love it. During a dinner date, the couple was joined by A-list friends Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Brad Falchuk, Cameron Diaz and her husband Benji Madden, per media reports.

5. Sugarfish

At celeb-favourite Sugarfish, the food and unique omakase-style service are based on Chef Nozawa’s 50 years of experience and training with master chefs in Japan. Nozawa-style sushi is a far cry from typical sushi in the US: you won’t find any regular California rolls, spicy tuna rolls or teriyaki at this hotspot. Instead, the chef believes that the sushi experience should be pure and simple.

And it’s a hit with Meghan and Harry, who have reportedly been repeatedly seen at his Montecito branch. In fact, as far back as 2016, Meghan posted a picture of its sushi on her now-deleted Instagram account, adding the caption: “Yes, please! #theresnoplacelikehome #sushi”

Located in the heart of West Hollywood, Fresh Corn Grill, known for its fast casual gourmet food, has long been a go-to dining destination for Meghan – she has been raving about this restaurant for over a decade. It serves up wholesome salads, hearty pastas, artisanal pizzas and mouth-watering tacos and enchiladas. Back in 2012, Meghan told DuJour: “I order lunch from this place constantly. It’s inexpensive and their salmon tacos – yes, salmon tacos – are a staple of my diet when I am in LA.”

7. La Scala

Beverly Hills’ La Scala is another long-time favourite of Meghan’s. Famous for its chopped salads, home-made pastas and celebrity fans, she first wrote about the long-running Italian restaurant on her former lifestyle blog, The Tig.

She wrote: “When I’m home there’s not a week that goes by that I don’t have their chopped salad with turkey. It’s beyond simple. I can try as I might to recreate it at home, but La Scala does something magical to this thing. It’s worth a stop – and great for star sighting as well.”

This classic American steakhouse serves up USDA prime beef and fresh seafood alongside crafted cocktails and premium wines in old-school Hollywood style. It was here that Meghan and Harry made their first Montecito public outing in October 2020, having dinner at her comfort food joint Lucky’s with singer Katherine McPhee and record producer David Foster, per People magazine.
