This summer, the city of Hong Kong will once more be electrified by the onstage charisma of Mirror – the beloved Cantopop boy band that has captured the hearts of millions.

Four of its members – Jer Lau, Anson Lo, Keung To and Edan Lui – embark on thrilling solo concerts in July and August, as a new chapter in their musical journeys unfolds.

Leading the way is Jer Lau Ying-ting, who will perform his first-ever solo concert from July 7 to 10 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

While fans eagerly await the dazzling array of ‘fits Lau will showcase at the concert, let’s take a look at his eclectic style:

Lau’s journey to a thriving singing career – which started out with busking – has been filled with challenges. But his perseverance and dedication ultimately led him to win the best new performer gold prize at the 2020 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation.

It was his fourth solo single “A Madman’s Diary”, released in 2021, that truly catapulted him to fame. In an interview with AM730, the Cantopop star revealed that the progressive rock track was a tribute to the legendary band Queen and their iconic song “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The song garnered numerous awards, including a spot in the esteemed “Top 10 Songs” at the 2021 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation.

In the music video for his latest single “JM Single 9” – “9” meaning dog in Cantonese, Lau’s look was striking. Donning a baggy, straight-jacket – meets-harlequin-style outfit, eyeliner, pink blush and with blond tousled hair, his mad, clownish persona was something to behold.

Effortlessly chic

But Lau doesn’t always play the madman.

Like many of his fellow Mirror members, Lau has become a sought-after brand ambassador in the worlds of fashion, skincare, make-up and even banking.

His collaboration with YSL is particularly noteworthy. The all-black ensemble he wore in the campaign exudes a subtle confidence, like Lau himself. A square-buckle belt held up his wide-leg trousers, topped off with an oversized blazer. Another eye-catching outfit was his Valentino trench coat look, which he paired with a relaxed, soft grey cotton hoodie underneath. Effortless cool.

Meet Jungle Lofi

Lau challenges conventional fashion standards with his inventive style. In November last year, the 30-year-old introduced his own fashion brand, Jungle Lofi.

Inspired by vintage and French workwear, the Jungle Lofi collection features unique curved patchwork that represents the universe, nature and cycles. It highlights the unfinished and fragmented charm found in lo-fi aesthetics, emphasising the collection’s appreciation for imperfection. The solid beige and black shades are said to embody day and night, and the gender-neutral, relaxed ‘fits are deliberately suitable for everyone.

Lau’s dynamic hairstyles showcase his ability to push the envelope and stay ahead in fashion. His unforgettable debut featured a curly, two-toned look with black hair on top and contrasting blond at the lower back.

Later, as Ferragamo’s brand ambassador, Lau revealed a straight and short hairstyle. More recently, he has embraced an ash-toned colour palette, experimenting with shades of grey and blond for a multidimensional look.

Bucket hat and more rings

A signature accessory that Lau consistently dons is the bucket hat, but for those with a keen eye, you may have also noticed his penchant for handmade silver rings from a local store in Tai Hang, The Polska Traveller.

As glimpsed on his Instagram, the artisanal jewellers crafted four bespoke rings for him, each reflecting the spirit of his songs and complementing his eclectic style.

Lau says he has grown fond of the jeweller’s oxidised silver rings with gemstones. Another favourite of his is the unique spoon ring, fashioned from antique Icelandic silver cutlery. This whimsical design pays homage to a 17th-century European tradition where servants would transform stolen spoons from their masters’ homes into wedding bands.

Lau continues to sport these remarkable rings on various occasions, such as music award shows and during the filming of his music videos.
