October 10 marks the birthday of the late Canto-pop megastar Anita Mui Yim-fong, who would be turning 58 years old this year if she were still alive.

But this year is more celebratory than most. In memory of the legendary singer and actress, biopic Anita will be released in Hong Kong cinemas in November, with model-turned-actress Louise Wong starring as Mui.

In addition, Louis Koo, Terrance Lau and Fish Liew will star as Eddie Lau (Mui’s stylist), Leslie Cheung (the 1980s Canto-pop king and one of Mui’s best friends) and Ann Mui (Mui’s sister), respectively, reliving the private life of the iconic star.

Before the film hits cinemas, we take a look at a few rare moments in Mui’s life that give a glimpse of why she was so beloved both on and off the screen.

The first New Talent Singing Awards

Whether you’re a fan of Mui’s or not, the first thing to know about her was that she triumphed as the champion of the first New Talent Singing Awards held by TVB back in 1982.

Singing the popular song The Windy Season (originally sung by Paula Tsui), her sultry vocals and commanding stage presence saw her beat out over 3,000 other contestants to finish on top.

Her reward? Mui’s debut album, “Debt Heart”, was subsequently released with local record company Capital Artists.

Revisiting Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park

Before Mui found herself performing on the inaugural New Talent Singing Awards, she had already been a singer for more than 10 years, performing in the streets and in the clubs with her sister Ann Mui Oi-fong, even when they were kids.

In this video (also from TVB), we see Mui revisiting Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park – once the largest amusement park in Hong Kong founded in 1949 and closed in 1997 – where she used to perform when she was young.

“I believe that there are a lot of memorable things in your childhood, however, for me, I have been performing since I was around four to five years old,” Mui recalls in the video. “I did not experience the ordinary things that every other child has experienced, except to perform on the stage of this amusement park.”

As the bridesmaid of her sister

With two brothers and one sister, Mui was the youngest sibling in the family. She had an especially close relationship with her sister Ann Mui, as the pair performed side by side from the moment they were old enough to sing.

In 1991, Ann was married and Anita was her bridesmaid. On that day, TVB’s programme Entertainment News Watch interviewed Anita. “I asked my stylist to get me the simplest dress for the day, I am trying my best to act as low-key as I can,” Anita joked during the interview.

In 2000, Ann died of cervical cancer, which was assessed to be hereditary as Anita later succumbed to the same disease three years later.

Performing with Leslie Cheung

It’s well-known that Mui had a very close friendship with Leslie Cheung.

This video shows the king and queen of 1980s Canto-pop performing Iceberg Fire together in a charity show for Po Leung Kuk in 1986 – a song taken from on one of Mui’s bestselling albums, “Bad Girl” (1985).

The song was an adaptation of the Japanese singer, Momoe Yamaguchi’s song, Rock n’ roll Widow.

Jiving with Jackie Chan in 1991

Staged in the Lee Theatre, Forever Anita: 10 Years On Stage, was a show produced by TVB in 1991 that celebrated Mui’s 10th anniversary of becoming a star.

There were an array of celebrities there that performed on the show, including famous Hong Kong singers Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Paula Tsui and Taiwanese singer Angus Tung.
One of the most delightful performances of the broadcast was Mui dancing the jive with martial arts superstar Jackie Chan. Audiences loved watching Mui being swung about by Chan with the pair wearing big grins on their faces.
