Eason Chan has lost out to Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou as the most-played artist of the year on YouTube in Hong Kong.

Other home-grown Hong Kong talent on the list, covering the last 12 months, includes singers Hins Cheung, Joey Yung and rock band Dear Jane.
Predictably, K-pop featured prominently on the list, with South Korean artists Blackpink, BTS and Twice all well-loved by Hongkongers.
Chou’s most popular song on the video-streaming platform is his 2016 hit Love Confession, which has attracted more than 201 million views since it was first posted. Chan’s top song is Because of Love, a duet with ’90s legend Faye Wong, with 28 million views.

Alan Walker was the only Western musician on the list. The Norwegian DJ and producer, who is best known for his 2015 single Faded, came in at 9th.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, announced the top artists on its platform to coincide with the launch of YouTube Music in Hong Kong last Wednesday.

While YouTube is known primarily for its video content, YouTube Music was launched as a music streaming service and app in 2015 before expanding to cover a desktop player. The service is currently available in 73 countries, including the US, UK and Australia.

The most subscribed YouTube channel among Hongkongers is the Chinese spoof cooking creator Ms Yeah, which has 7.8 million subscribers in total. The most popular Hong Kong channel is Shadow Music, a music platform with 2.8 million subscribers and more than a billion views across its 200-plus videos.

After releasing his debut album in 2000, Chou, now 40, has sold more than 30 million albums and performed six world tours.

Eason Chan’s top song was Because of Love, a duet with ’90s legend Faye Wong.
He was also in the news last week after winning a legal battle against the mainland Chinese gaming giant and music streaming service NetEase, which had been licensing the star’s songs from streaming service Tencent Music since 2015. After failing to renew its 2018-19 contract for Chou’s discography, NetEase was ordered to pay 850,000 yuan (US$120,000) to Tencent.
