Liverpool were mobbed by adoring fans as they landed at Hong Kong Airport on Monday morning.

The English giants are in town for the Premier League Asia Trophy, also featuring Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City at Hong Kong Stadium on Wednesday and Saturday.

The team were last in Hong Kong in 1997 and it was clear that absence had made hearts grow fonder as hundreds of fans made the pilgrimage to the airport to get close to their heroes.

Outside the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in West Kowloon another group were camped, waiting for a chance to press the flesh or get a selfie.

The club have landed in Hong Kong with only two new signings for the coming season – Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke – but manager Juergen Klopp insisted he was not worried.

Liverpool have been linked with Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, but have so far been frustrated.

Liverpool received a warm welcome Hong Kong International Airport.

“If [the owners] could make it quicker, you can imagine they would be here and trying. It’s not about money or something like this,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.

“I can imagine if you are not involved it is annoying for fans. They think: ‘Oh my God! Nothing happens here! Everything happens there!’

“We cannot think like this. And in the meantime, we work together. We are working really hard, going out to Asia and all that stuff.

“We really feel good that we can keep the team together that played last season. What we do from now will help us to improve. I felt we already had a pretty good side last year, especially when everyone is fit and that gives me a good feeling.”

Liverpool will launch their new third kit at a press event in the hotel on Monday afternoon.
