Tyron Woodley’s embarrassment is Jake Paul’s win and MMA’s loss as YouTuber continues boxing journey

  • The 39-year-old former UFC champion embarrassed himself by not finishing Jake Paul as MMA fans watched in horror and disbelief
  • Paul’s calculated risk, picking a UFC fighter not known for having stand-up power, paid off with a split-decision win in Cleveland

Tyron Woodley was never the UFC star he was supposed to be, and now he is not the saviour we were all hoping he could be.

The former welterweight champion defended his belt four times, however UFC president Dana White never seemed to get on board with “The Chosen One”. Now Woodley has further descended down the slide of respectability, in what was another frustrating boxing match that surely left millions of fans frothing and swearing.

Now we all see what White saw – or didn’t – in Woodley. The former NCAA wrestler had a golden opportunity to end the court jester shtick that is social media star Jake Paul, but he came out slow, slugging, throwing too few punches and couldn’t capitalise on Sunday night in Cleveland, Ohio in another celebrity circus show.

For some reason Woodley decided to phone in his appearance, and as his corner grew more frustrated between each round we find ourselves back in the Jake Paul quagmire.

Tyron Woodley’s embarrassment is Paul’s win, as the 24-year-old delivered the result all mixed martial arts and boxing fans alike were dreading: a split decision victory in a match he clearly won by simply throwing more punches. To be fair, the fact that Paul didn’t knock out Woodley is a saving grace, but let’s be honest, that’s grasping for a positive in an entirely negative situation.

Now Woodley has another loss on his record, five in a row, and is added to the growing list of people embarrassed in the ring by a guy who should have no business embarrassing any actual fighter. At least Ben Askren clearly looked like he was phoning in his first round knockout against Paul in April in Atlanta, leaning into the circus act. But Woodley has no excuse for this, he trained hard, looked to be all business, and could not deliver one iota of redemption for purist pugilist fans.

Woodley crashed out of the UFC, losing his final four fights, the end of his MMA career coming via a choke out at the hands of Vicente Luque in the first round of their March bout. White cut the 39-year-old Woodley after stating he should retire from the UFC, which Woodley didn’t seem to argue much against.

What happens if Jake Paul beats Tyron Woodley?

Now the rest of the world knows why. Woodley could not find the killer instinct losing the first three rounds and finally showing up in the fourth with a potential knockout punch. But Woodley couldn’t capitalise, as Paul made it to the bell, and then in the fifth, when everyone was hoping Woodley would come out and finish Paul, he decided on a Sunday stroll through the park.

So, where does this leave us? Paul won the fight on the judge’s scorecard and it is tough to argue with that. He threw more punches, was the more active fighter, and despite taking a couple hard blows from Woodley, clearly was the better boxer.

This is now the universe we live in. Five years ago if you stopped an MMA fan on the street and said that in 2021 Jake Paul would beat Tyron Woodley in a celebrity boxing match, you would get laughed off the block, cast off as an insane person, and never listened to again.

You have to give credit to Paul for his sleight of hand, he has now carefully chosen two retired, once respected UFC fighters, specifically for the fact neither of them can throw punches harder than a pillow fight, and beat them. He’s chosen fighters well past their prime, ones that have little cardio left in the tank, and made his youthful exuberance count.

Paul now gets another few months to prance around on social media, berate White and the UFC over fighter pay, make money uploading videos to YouTube and infuriating everyone. This is on Woodley, for not figuring out how to bring some punching power into the fight, and also, on the rest of us for tuning into this car cash once again. If we thought Floyd Mayweather dancing around the ring with older brother Logan Paul was discouraging, try watching the debacle that just happened in Cleveland again.

White is now going to have to deal with another round of questions from reporters, answer another slew of queries as to why one of his retired fighters lost to a guy that used to work for Disney, and pray Paul either decides to fight actual boxers, or finally picks someone with punching power.

The chances of that are slim to none, as there is talk next in line for Paul is Dan Henderson. Let me be the first to say this is a disaster waiting to happen, and we will once again get the magician pulling a fast one on all of us.

At this point, we have to eat some humble pie, and do what no one ever thought we would have to do. We have to give Paul credit. This kid has whipped the media into a frenzy, and on Sunday, he backed it up with actual boxing prowess, who would have thought? Take a bow Jake, you’ve earned it.
