Asia Rugby Championship: Hong Kong’s women get preparations off to flying start with 22-17 win over Sweden

  • Tries from Roshini Turner, Ng Ki-sum and Chloe Baltazar enough to give Hong Kong winning start to European tour
  • Royce Chan’s side will play the Netherlands on Saturday as they build towards the Asia Rugby Championship

Hong Kong head coach Royce Chan Leong-sze said there was still “a lot of work to be done” after her side narrowly beat Sweden on Monday.

Tries from Roshini Turner, Ng Kin-sum and a late winner from Chloe Baltazar secured a 22-17 victory at the National Rugby Centre Stadium in Amsterdam.

With the Asia Rugby Championship three weeks away, the city’s women are in the Netherlands for two warm-up matches, the second of which is on Saturday.

But after throwing away a 17-0 lead at half-time, Chan knows her players will need to be fully focused against the hosts.

“This was a good game to give us some perspective on the difference between our club season and international level,” Chan said. “Sweden put us under pressure in many ways.

“We capped a lot of new players, so I’d like to congratulate them, but there is a lot of work to be done. It’s a big job for us to get that review and preparation right ahead of this weekend. But we’re excited and we’re up for it.”
