Hong Kong to take on Canada, Malaysia in one-day tri-series, as teams begin preparing for cricket World Cup run

  • Tournament will be first of busy year for men’s team, who have Asia Cup, and World Cup qualifiers coming up
  • Round-robin competition will be played at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground

Hong Kong’s men face another busy year of cricket, with tournaments coming thick and fast as they build up to the T20 and ODI World Cups.

In preparation for the latter, Hong Kong will host a one-day tri-series against Canada and Malaysia towards the end of this month.

It will be the first time the Canadian team has played in the city, with the teams facing off in a round-robin tournament at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground between January 31 and February 5.

The series is the first of three Hong Kong will take part in over the next several months, with the East Asia Cup, featuring Japan and China, in February, and a quadrangular tournament in March.

April brings the qualifiers for next year’s T20 Asia Cup, and the first round of the 2027 One Day World Cup Challenge League also gets under way later this year.

Over the summer, Hong Kong’s men will also begin their bid to reach the T20 World Cup in 2026, with the first stage of regional qualifying in July.

First up though are Canada and Malaysia, and Burji Shroff, chairman of Cricket Hong Kong China, said he was looking forward to “a showcase of top-class cricket talent”.

Tournament Schedule (all games 9am): Hong Kong v Canada (January 31); Malaysia v Canada (February 1); Hong Kong v Malaysia (February 3); Final (February 4); Third place v Hong Kong ‘A’ (February 5).
