Barack Obama plans to move into a house worth HK$50 million ... what’s that get you in Hong Kong (hint: a lot less)?

US President Barack Obama is reportedly planning to move into a US$6.5 million (HK$50 million) mansion in Washington’s upscale Kalorama neighbourhood when his time in the White House ends.

The Obamas will be renting the 8,200 square foot home for US$22,000 (HK$170,000) a month from Joe Lockhart, former press secretary and senior advisor to Bill Clinton.

The four-storey pile comes with nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms and spacious stone-tiled outdoor patio – yet the price tag is surprisingly good value by Hong Kong standards.

With the average home price a hefty HK$4.34 million, the most expensive flat ever sold in Asia was on Hong Kong Island, at HK$590 million for 5,732 sq ft.

So what does a HK$50 million property look like in the SAR?

The New Territories house is selling for HK$45 million and up for rent at HK$100,000. Its gross area of 3,020 sq ft includes four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms.

The two-storey house comes with rooftop terrace and garden, as well as master bedroom balcony. There’s also a maid’s room with bathroom on the ground floor and three covered parking spaces.

Consort Rise, Pokfulam

The 2,800 sq ft house with one covered parking space is selling for HK$45 million. It may be missing the sea view, but this mountain facing house has two patios and a tiered rooftop terrace.

Nestled in a quiet neighbourhood on the west side of Hong Kong Island, the house comes with four bedrooms, five bedrooms, a study and a maid’s room. There’s also a pool shared with neighbouring homes.

Bel-Air, Pokfulam

At HK$58 million, the 2,080 sq ft two-storey penthouse apartment boasts a private rooftop terrace and designer interiors. Slightly more expensive than Obama’s house, the modern flat has a white marble fireplace, white staircase and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home includes two parking spaces under the building. It may be more expensive and smaller, but the sea view from the connecting living room and kitchen balcony is stunning.

Ridge Court, Repulse Bay

In one of the most sought-after residential locations in Hong Kong, the Ridge Court flat looks towards Repulse Bay. The home’s sea view balcony leads off the living and dining room.

At HK$46 million, the 2,300 sq ft apartment has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a maid’s room – but only one parking space.

The “European-style” house with garden and swimming pool comes with an asking price of HK$45 million, or HK$120,000 rent. All three bedrooms include their own en-suite bathrooms and large enough to accommodate a queen-sized bed – a rarity in Hong Kong. The home also has a maid’s room and two covered parking spaces
