  • Sections of lanes closed because of accident reopened to all traffic in afternoon

Eleven people were injured when two public buses collided at the Kowloon entrance of a cross-harbour tunnel in Hong Kong on Friday, disrupting traffic for more than two hours.

Police said the collision took place at around 12.04pm after the two KMB vehicles passed the toll plaza of the Western Harbour Tunnel.

The 11 passengers – four men and seven women – from the two buses suffered minor injuries, according to a force spokeswoman.

She said three of the injured were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei. The other eight were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital, also in Yau Ma Tei.

Sections of the Hong Kong Island-bound lanes of the tunnel near the entrance that were closed due to the accident reopened to all traffic as of 2.32pm, the Transport Department said.

Separately, a five-vehicle pile-up in North Point left eight people injured and caused traffic disruptions near the Island Eastern Corridor.

Police received reports about the accident involving two private cars, two taxis and a light goods vehicle near the expressway at around 8.51am.

Eight men suffered minor injuries and were sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, a police spokesman said.

The department confirmed at around 10.30am that the fast lane of the corridor on the Central-bound side near the ICAC’s headquarters was still closed to traffic.

“Only the middle and slow lanes are available to motorists,” it said. “Traffic is congested now.”
