The ex-husband of slain Hong Kong model Abby Choi Tin-fung could face an additional charge for jumping bail in 2015, linked to his alleged involvement in seven counts of theft, a court has heard.

Alex Kwong Kong-chi, 28, appeared in the District Court on Tuesday without any legal representation. He was already remanded in custody in connection with the murder of the socialite.

Kwong was charged with seven counts of theft over the alleged stealing of 39 necklaces, 32 bracelets, 13 gold bars, 102 gold grains, six pendants and 10 taels of gold across separate incidents between May 2013 and January 2015.

The 28-year-old defendant absconded in 2015 but was arrested on February 25, 2023, at Tung Chung Development Pier while waiting for a speedboat to flee to mainland China after Choi’s death.

The prosecution in the theft case on Tuesday applied for a 10-week adjournment for police to further re-examine and process evidence spanning the past seven and a half years.

The prosecutor said he was considering adding a new charge in relation to Kwong jumping bail. Charges would be amended in accordance with police’s review of the evidence, he added.

Kwong told the court he had withdrawn his application to seek legal aid and had already hired a lawyer, but documents from the relevant department had not been sent to his counsel.

Chief District Judge Justin Ko King-sau told Kwong to give better instructions to his newly hired lawyer as the court could not proceed without his legal representative.

Kwong, his father Kwong Kau, 65, and elder brother Anthony Kwong Kong-kit, 32, are behind bars on a joint murder charge for allegedly killing Choi in February.

Kwong’s mother, Jenny Li Sui-heung, 63, faces a charge of perverting the course of justice for allegedly destroying evidence during a police investigation.

All four were remanded in custody without bail. That case was adjourned for 12 weeks for police to conduct further investigation.
