Police are searching for a South Asian man after an online video clip showed he used a box cutter to strike out at a protester twice in the abdomen during a scuffle at the Mong Kok protest zone on Wednesday.

The alleged attack happened when the man wearing a black-and-white T-shirt and blue jeans was among a group of people tearing down a roadblock when they were confronted by a group of Occupy Central protesters at about 6pm, a YouTube video showed.

In the 1.41-minute video clip the attacker, who was carrying a box cutter, was grabbed by a protester wearing a red shirt during a scuffle, who then retaliated by lunging the implement twice towards the abdomen of the protester before he handed over the cutter to his friends and left the scene.

A senior police officer said it appeared the blade of the cutter was not extended from its handle, otherwise the victim would have suffered serious stab wounds.

He said police had not received any complaints about an alleged stabbed in Mong Kok.

He said police were looking for the attacker as well as the victim.

Crime-squad officers from Mong Kok police station are investigating. So far, no one has been arrested.
