A Chinese political prodigy, who has watched China’s state-run news channel since the age of two and read the Communist Party mouthpiece the People’s Daily since he was seven, is to be given a special offer to study at university to study Marxist theory.

News on Sunday that Huang Yibo, a graduate student at Hubei Provincial Shuiguohu High School had been invited to enrol at Wuhan University, in Hubei province, spread like wildfire on mainland social media, the new website Thepaper.cn reported.

Huang, 18, who is regarded as an outstanding student and was a member of the Wuhan Young Pioneers – a primary school branch of the Communist Youth League – needs to score only 38 points above the minimum score in the gaokao – the mainland’s challenging national university entrance exam – to gain entry to the university’s School of Marxism.

He has already passed his interview to study at the university.

Huang became an internet sensation at the age of 13 when he posted photographs of his five-stripe badge – a symbol of status among members of the Young Pioneers – which normally has a national maximum of only three stripes to indicate the highest rank.

Some internet commenters have said Huang’s facial expression resembles the characteristics of past revolutionary figures favoured by China’s Communist Party.
