Expectant mother tries to kill herself and unborn child by swallowing 30 razor blades after row with Chinese husband’s parents
A pregnant Vietnamese woman who is married to a Chinese man tried to kill herself and her unborn child by swallowing 13 razor blades after quarrelling with her husband’s parents, mainland media reports.
The 27-year-old woman was rushed to hospital at 9pm on Sunday night and underwent more than two hours of surgery to successfully retrieve all of the blades – the longest of which measured more than 3 centimetres, Zhejiang Radio reported.
Both the mother and her unborn child are expected to make a full recovery.
The parents of the woman’s husband told the radio station that she had never wanted to have a baby and had acted impulsively by buying and swallowing razor blades.
Doctors at Lishui Central Hospital in the city of Lishui, warned that the razor blades woman’s condition had been very serious because any sudden movement could easily have caused the blades to slice open her stomach, oesophagus or pharynx.
Doctors also warned that people that it was crucial that anyone that accidentally swallowed anything sharp should always seek immediate medical attention.
