Woman calls husband as her car is swept by floods

Husband scrambled to the scene as was found by rescuers with his wife in his arms

A religious teacher driving home after school in the district of Besut in Malaysia met a tragic end when the car she was driving fell into a three metre-deep drain by the side of a flooded road.

Even as she was drowning, Masnim Ngah, 41, an ustazah at the Besut Vocational College, tried to call her husband.

Ahmad Ruzaizi Mahmud, 46, could only listen in horror as the water submerged the car. He rushed to the scene but was too late.

Ruzaizi, who is a teacher at SK Benting Lintang, was also on his way back to their house and scrambled to help his wife.

“He got into the drain and broke the front passenger windscreen to rescue his wife using a steel rod,” said Besut Fire and Rescue Services Department station chief Asst Comm Mohd Zailani Abdullah.

“When we reached the scene, we saw the husband seated on the roof of the submerged car with his wife in his arms,” he said.

Masnim was the first fatality of the Terengganu floods this year.

Meanwhile, due to the continuous downpour over the past few days, some 30m of the road connecting Kenyir to Gua Musang in Kelantan collapsed due to a landslide and erosion.

The road gave way at Section 52 of the Jalan Aring 8-Kenyir-Kuala Jeneris route.

Hulu Terengganu Public Works Department (PWD) engineer Mohd Fadzlie Ibrahim said the road was mainly used by those travelling from Gua Musang to Kenyir only.

However, they now have to use an alternative route which is Gua Musang-Kuala Krai-Machang-Sungai Tong-Kuala Jeneris Kenyir.

He said the alternative route was two hours longer.

Mohd Fadzlie said the PWD started repair work on the affected roads and the slope.
