Actress Olivia Munn revealed on Wednesday that she had undergone a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The X-Men: Apocalypse and The Newsroom actress took to Instagram to tell followers her news, just days after she attended the Oscars ceremony with her comedian partner, John Mulaney.

The 43-year-old said the cancer had been discovered almost a year ago after her doctor noted she was at elevated risk for the disease and suggested she undergo an additional scan, 12 months before a routine screening.

After initial tests, a biopsy was ordered. “The biopsy showed I had Luminal B cancer in both breasts. Luminal B is an aggressive, fast moving cancer,” she wrote, adding that the double mastectomy was performed 30 days later.

Looking radiant, Munn walked the red carpet at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood where her other half Mulaney presented an Oscar and later attended the celebrity-filled Vanity Fair after party together.

1. Angelina Jolie

Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie learned in 2013 that she had a significantly high risk of developing breast cancer due to mutation of genes. While Jolie was never diagnosed with the disease, she chose to take preventive measures and underwent a double mastectomy, possibly a life-saving move.

Jolie’s brave decision and her advocacy for breast cancer awareness was noted worldwide, creating the “Angelina Jolie effect” where more women were not only getting tested for gene mutations and mammograms, but also undergoing prophylactic mastectomies to greatly reduce risks of developing breast cancer.

2. Christina Applegate

Married … with Children star Christina Applegate was 36 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2008. Fortunately, the cancer was detected early as the actress had been on an early cancer detection plan, given that her mother had also been diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite the actress only have cancer in one breast, she chose to undergo a double mastectomy as her genetic mutation meant she was at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Applegate has since founded the Right Action for Women, an organisation that helps women with financial obstacles to pay for MRI screenings and testing. While her battle with breast cancer is over, Applegate is still struggling with multiple sclerosis, an incurable autoimmune disease.

3. Linda Evangelista

Canadian fashion model Linda Evangelista was 53 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Her annual mammogram (an X-ray of the breasts to look for early signs of cancer) in December 2018 revealed she was in the early stages of developing the disease. In July 2020, Evangelista was told her cancer had returned after a check up with her oncologist.
 

Currently cancer free, Evangelista actively urges her followers on social media to pay attention to the importance of cancer screenings.

In 2022, journalist and author Katie Couric came forth about her diagnosis and battle with breast cancer through an essay she wrote and published on her personal blog, Katie Couric Media.

“I was very fortunate,” she said in a 2023 interview with People. “My cancer was caught very, very early when it’s most treatable, and if I can just be an advertisement for people to get screened, to get their mammography done, to talk to their doctors, and if they have dense breasts, to get additional screening.”

5. Robin Roberts

In September 2007, ABC’s Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts announced on air to her viewers that she had been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, a rare and aggressive tumour. After her successful battle with breast cancer, in 2012, Roberts was told she had myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a rare disease that requires bone-marrow transplant.

Now 63, Roberts is cancer free and a loud and proud advocate for breast cancer awareness as well as bone-marrow donation. Unfortunately, Robert’s long-time partner Amber Laign was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

6. Julia Louis-Dreyfus

The day after winning her sixth Emmy award in 2017, Seinfeld actress and comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus, then 56, was told she had stage two breast cancer. After undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, the 63-year-old actress was declared cancer free in October 2018. Louis-Dreyfus has since been a strong advocate for universal healthcare.

7. Sheryl Crow

Nine-time Grammy award-winner Sheryl Crow has been advocating for regular mammograms and cancer screenings ever since a routine check-up saved her life. Crow was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) at age 44 in 2006. Luckily, it was discovered at an early stage and treated after a lumpectomy and seven weeks of radiation therapy.

“I’ve spent the past decade sharing my experience with breast cancer with women across the world – from my fans to their sisters, daughters and mothers – in the hopes that they will learn from my experience and prioritise their health,” the songstress told People.

8. Kylie Minogue

Australian singer and icon Kylie Minogue, 55, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and won the gruelling battle a year later after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. In 2013, she was awarded by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia for her work in raising breast cancer awareness.

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in 2006 during a routine mammogram. The actress silently battled the disease and underwent six weeks of radiation and a lumpectomy to overcome it. In 2008, Nixon, 57, joined the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to raise awareness, saying, “Get your mammograms and don’t delay.”

10. Sandra Lee

Celebrity chef Sandra Lee was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 after a routine mammogram and had to undergo a double mastectomy. Lee has since been an active advocate for breast cancer awareness. In 2018, she released documentary Rx: Early Detection, a Cancer Journey with Sandra Lee to highlight the importance of regular screenings and early detection.

In 2022, Lee revealed through an Instagram post that she underwent a complete hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus, after her gynaecologist informed her about changes in her cells.
