Sho Hirano’s luxury watch collection: the former member of King & Prince and star of Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a Rolex and Harry Winston aficionado, donning his bling with casual streetwear

Boy band member and actor Sho Hirano has recently become a fashion darling of sorts, jet-setting around the world and attending fashion shows, pop-ups and parties.

Last year, he made a splash in Hong Kong at Pharrell Williams’ Louis Vuitton menswear show along the Avenue of Stars on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. He returned just weeks later for the opening of the luxury French fashion house’s pop-up in SoHo, Central, giving fans yet another glimpse while piquing the interest of those unfamiliar with the Japanese star.

The 27-year-old, who recently left the boy band King & Prince, formed a new music act, Number_i, with Yuta Jinguji and Yuta Kishi late last year.

But what really put Hirano on the map for most fans was his leading role in the movie adaptation of the high school romance manga of the same name, Kaguya-sama: Love is War, and the sequel, Kaguya-sama: Love is War – Final.

The young star shows a keen interest in fashion and has a style combining streetwear and high-end designs. He’s also amassed an impressive luxury watch collection – and while he owns plenty of sports watches, he also has a particular affinity for diamond-encrusted timepieces.

1. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40

A favourite with the hip-hop crowd and NBA stars alike, the Rolex Day-Date has gained a different set of fans thanks to new models featuring various dial iterations, from stand-out colours to unique materials. The watch’s Oyster metal link bracelet lends versatility, allowing it to match stylishly with everything from casual streetwear to black tie attire.

Hirano’s rendition of the watch – affectionately known as the presidents’ watch, as several American presidents wore it – is crafted in 18k yellow gold with a dial entirely covered in diamonds. In addition to the hour, minute and second, the watch indicates the day and the date, hence its name.

The Day-Date might just be Hirano’s favourite watch – it’s the most-spotted piece on his Instagram feed, where he frequently pairs it with oversized T-shirts and baggy denim.

2. Harry Winston Ocean Biretrograde Automatic 42

It’s unsurprising that a classic like the Day-Date found its way into Hirano’s collection. A less obvious model he’s been spotted wearing is Harry Winston’s Ocean Biretrograde Automatic. The luxury brand is renowned for its diamond-based creations, as one of the most iconic jewellery brands with roots in the US. Despite a focus on jewellery, the brand’s been known to create incredibly complicated timepieces as part of its super exclusive Opus collection.

Hirano’s Ocean Biretrograde Automatic concentrates the best of Harry Winston know-how. The timepiece features central hour and minute hands, with the date and seconds expressed in retrograde at the five and seven o’clock positions. This means that instead of the hands pointing to the date and seconds each making a complete circle, they jump back to their starting position. Hence, instead of being circular, retrograde indices are depicted as arches or semicircles.

The Japanese singer and actor’s particular model of the Ocean Biretrograde is crafted in white gold and accented with an explosion of diamonds on the case and across the dial. He has been seen pairing its white leather strap with a casual streetwear look.

3. Rolex Daytona

Another classic in Hirano’s collection is the Rolex Daytona. The chronograph – with its three sub-dials at three, six and nine o’clock – is one of the most recognisable timepieces ever created. It is also one of the most sought-after Rolexes on the market, its vintage iterations making big splashes on the auction scene.

Among the more popular include the monochrome Panda model with a black or white ceramic bezel and sub-dials, against a contrasting dial. The platinum version with a brown bezel and an ice-blue dial is also highly coveted. And if you’ve spotted the piece on the wrist of a rapper or basketballer, chances are it could be the rainbow gem set model – one of the most difficult pieces to get your hands on.
