While everyone is familiar with how royals live lavish lives, far fewer recognise them as published authors. Yet years of elite education, resources and connections often leave more literary minded royal surprisingly well placed to write – as the following examples prove.

Behind palace doors, these royals were able to find the time to pour their creativity onto the page. Here are six who have added “published author” to their resume and list of achievements.

Prince Charles – Climate Change

An established author, Prince Charles has written various books including A Vision of Britain: A Personal View of Architecture (1989) and a children’s book The Old Man of Lochnagar (1989).

 

But his recent project, Climate Change (2017), co-authored with environmentalist Tony Juniper and climate scientist Emily Shuckburgh, has affirmed his passion for the environment, identifying challenges and presenting solutions to climate change.

Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan – The Sandwich Swap

Queen Rania visited the United Nations Headquarters in 2010 to launch The Sandwich Swap, a children’s book that highlights cross-cultural understanding.

Based on her childhood experience, the book tells the story of two girls who share and do everything together – except swap their lunch.

Princess Michael of Kent – A Cheetah’s Tale

The Princess, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth, wears many hats. According to her website bio, she’s a writer, historian, lecturer, interior designer and an art consultant.

 

She has penned three non-fiction novels and the Anjou Trilogy, three historical novels set in 15th century France. Her most recent book, A Cheetah’s Tale chronicles her early life travelling in Africa and raising a cheetah cub.

Charlotte Casiraghi – Archipel des Passions 

Charlotte, daughter of Caroline, Princess of Hanover, is eleventh in line to the throne of Monaco. She collaborated with her former philosophy professor Robert Maggiori to produce Archipel des Passions (only available in French).

 

This philosophical tome, dedicated to her father, Stefano Casiraghi, who passed away in 1990, reads like a “treatise of the passions”, covering entries like love, cruelty and patience.

 

Meghan Markle – Together: Our Community Cookbook

Meghan Markle’s cookbook showcases a collection of recipes from a group of women whose families and communities were displaced by the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

 

According to Variety, Meghan was drawn to the book project because it had the power to bring people together regardless of ethnicity, creed, race and class.

Royal etiquette is usually written about by etiquette experts but this time, Marie Chantal has given us her perspective. According to publisher Vendome Press the guide addresses rules of etiquette, including table manners, social media, fashion dos and don’ts, and how to speak properly in a conversation.
