Two father-and-son duos went up against each other at this year’s US$1 million PNC Championship at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, Grande Lakes in Florida, USA, on December 19 – John Daly and his son John Daly II, and Tigers Woods and his son Charlie. The Dalys won the tournament, finishing at 27 under par, two strokes ahead of the Woods who came in second, CNN reported.

However, despite not winning the top prize, the prestigious competition served as a breakthrough event for the Woods. Not only did the event mark the return of Tiger after a car crash that damaged his leg and kept him bedridden for nearly four months, it also highlighted Charlie’s charisma and performance on the golf course. Charlie may have even outshone his father, displaying excellent skills at such a young age.

But outside the sport, what do we know about the 12-year-old golf prodigy?

Charlie is his father’s mini-me

Charlie proved that he really is his father’s doppelgänger at the PNC Championship. People reported that their similarities were so obvious that PGA Tour had to record and compare the duo in a supercut video, which has raked in millions of views.

Before the 2021 tournament, Tiger was shown clips from the compilation. “Two things that stick out: the timing of the twirls and the pick up of the tee,” he said, according to Yahoo! News. He also observed how he and Charlie touch their noses: “We both have allergies so we both struggle on the golf course. We get wind blowing and we’re both sniffing.”

He can speak Swedish

Elin Nordegren, Tiger’s ex-wife, told People in 2010 that even though she was raising Charlie and his older sister, Sam, 14, in Florida, they would still be in touch with their Swedish roots and heritage.

“My children and I are both Swedish and American citizens, we speak both languages,” she said in the same interview. She also spoke of her plans at that time to bring them to Sweden to experience the culture and maintain a close relationship with their maternal relatives.

Tiger and Nordegren divorced in 2010 but share parenting responsibilities. Four years later, Nordegren told People that her relationship with Tiger is “centred around our children”. In 2015, Tiger echoed a similar sentiment, revealing to Time that he and Nordegren “work hard to co-parent and to make sure that the kids’ lives are fantastic”.

He likes to play football

It’s no surprise that Charlie would take an interest in golf; there’s even a video of him swinging a golf club at age four. But did you know that he was first hooked on playing football?

“They [Charlie and Sam] are keen into soccer; if they want to play golf, that’s great. If they don’t, that’s fine, too. As long as they have a good time playing sports,” Tiger told Golf.com in 2018.

However, in 2020, the pandemic shifted Charlie’s interest and the golf bug struck when he and Tiger started to play more, according to Golf Digest.

He has expensive taste in golf clubs

According to Golf, Charlie owns a set of P7MC irons from sports manufacturing company TaylorMade, which costs US$1,400. The publication also noted that the set of irons he’s using is currently employed by major champion Collin Morikawa and PGA Tour winner Matthew Wolff.
