Top 5 videos of the week: from a space ‘galaxy’ created by spinning a wet ball to India’s ‘Birdman’ who feeds 4,000 parakeets a day

Every Saturday, the South China Morning Post presents its top video picks from SCMP.tv and the web, highlighting news, features, mini-documentaries and more.

This week, we feature the unique friendship between a man and a cute seal, who jumped aboard his boat, and a time-lapse video showing girl growing up over 16 years - from when she was a new-born baby until her teenage years.

Gavin Free and Daniel Gruchy, two YouTubers who call themselves "The Slow Mo Guys", have done a new slow-motion experiment after their last video of Dan sitting in a giant water balloon went viral.

This time, they created hypnotic galaxy effects simply by dunking a foam ball in water and spinning it.

The awesome slow-motion footage filmed by their high-speed 4K camera shows the resemblance between a spiralling foam ball and our stunning galaxy.

They also added blue and purple food colouring to the water to create "galaxies" of different colours.

At the end, Gavin used the ball to hit Dan's face: the slow-mo footage of the "attack" is hilarious.

Time-lapse video shows girl growing up from a baby to a 16-year-old

Growing up might be one of the most mysterious and amazing things in a person's life. Dutch artist Frans Hofmeester has filmed his 16-year-old daughter Lotte for 15 seconds every week since the day when she was born.

In this four-minute time-lapse video, we watch the condensed version of a girl growing up - from being a baby to a teenager.

This is definitely one of the most touching stories about the refugee crisis now affecting Europe.

Two Turkish fishermen rescued an 18-month-old Syrian toddler and his family in the Aegean sea on October 21 after the boat carrying them towards the Greek islands sank near the Turkish holiday resort of Kusadasi.

Video shot by one of the fishermen showed the baby floating face-down in the choppy water before being swiftly hauled onto the boat.

You don't make new friends everyday, especially if that new friend happens to a cute seal.

One lucky man met a rather unexpected and adorable new friend on his boat.

"Here's my new friend," the man says in the video as the seal is seen snuggling up behind him.

"He jumped aboard out at the bridge ... Just hanging out with me."

What a nice encounter!

Sekar, a 62-year-old camera technician living in the city of Chennai, is better known as India's "Birdman".

He has been feeding about 4,000 wild parakeets twice a day for 10 years on the rooftop of his home.

The bird enthusiast spends 40 per cent of his income on their feed and gets up at 4am everyday to prepare food for his feathered friends.

“I don’t have anything other than these birds, Sekar says in this mini-documentary produced by Barcroft TV. "My life revolves around these birds.”
