Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024 full list: Sézanne in Tokyo takes No 1, Singapore takes 8 spots, 2 awards for Hong Kong

  • The 12th edition of the annual restaurant rankings saw a new No 1, a highest climber award for Hong Kong’s Wing, and host South Korea take four spots
  • Singapore has the most restaurants ranked in the top 50, with Hong Kong in second place. A Beijing restaurant wins the One to Watch Award

The annual awards ceremony for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants was held in Seoul, South Korea, on March 26, with Sézanne in Tokyo coming home in top spot for the first time.

In second place was Florilège, also in Tokyo, with Gaggan Anand’s eponymous restaurant in Bangkok rounding up the top 3.

“It honestly feels pretty good, we feel happy for the team, for the city, for our producers,” said head chef Daniel Calvert of Sézanne’s win.

“It means a lot to me. We could not have done it without the support of the community in Japan.”

Hong Kong fine-dining Cantonese restaurants The Chairman and Wing, winner of the highest climber award, rounded out the top five.
In the special awards category, Danny Yip of The Chairman received his Icon Award, while Pichaya “Pam” Soontornyanakij accepted the award for best female chef. Her restaurant, Potong, climbed from 35th to 17th place.

Korean restaurant Mosu, headed by chef Sung Anh and with a branch in Hong Kong at M+ museum, won the Chef’s Choice award, drawing a huge round of applause from the room, especially from his fellow Koreans that were present.

The three-Michelin-star restaurant in Seoul, South Korea, is currently closed pending its relocation and will open in the same neighbourhood by summer, the chef shares.

“I’m speechless,” Anh said of his award. “To explain the feeling that I’ve been voted by chefs around the world, we forget that this is a community.

“We all have the same goal and for them to vote for me and write my name down when they think of who is respected - that is such an honour.”

Anh added that while host country South Korea did not have any restaurants in the top 10, he did not see this as a negative.

“We don’t see that as a problem. We see that as a chance to make this dining scene better, so that more people from foreign countries can come to Korea and discover our cuisine.”

The Best Sommelier Award went to Kevin Lu of Logy, who joined the Taipei restaurant in 2022.

Tokyo-based Mineko Kato received the award for best pastry chef for her artful vegan and plant-based desserts at Faro restaurant.
