From a new season and anime feature on Netflix to an augmented reality game, a new set of collectible figures and a board game, there is no stopping the expansion of the Witcher universe.

The second season of The Witcher was announced over the weekend during the first WitcherCon, an online fan convention co-presented by Netflix and video game developer CD Projekt Red, and is set for release on December 17, after its production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first season, which debuted at the end of 2019 starring Henry Cavill as Witcher Geralt of Rivia, was the most watched original series on Netflix until it was unseated in 2020 by Bridgerton.

Also revealed at the event was a new anime film called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which tells the backstory of one of the most important characters in the series: Vesemir, Geralt’s mentor. The spin-off will be available for streaming on Netflix from August 23.

CD Projekt Red, which created The Witcher video game series based on novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, said it will release free downloadable content “inspired by” Netflix’s live-action show for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt game on all platforms including PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Not to be left out, mobile phone gamers can also soon catch a glimpse of the Witcher universe in The Witcher: Monster Slayer, an augmented reality game that will premiere on both iOS and Android devices on July 21. Players will be able to fight virtual creatures lurking in their neighbourhood in real time. Pre-registration for the game is available on Google Play now.

WitcherCon was streamed on both YouTube and Twitch on July 9 and 10 and featured the main cast members of Netflix’s The Witcher – Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan – as well as game designers from CD Projekt Red who created The Witcher video games. Other video game titles based on the Witcher universe include Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
