Hong Kong really dislikes Philippines, according to 'ugly' football fans and new poll
Azkals football fans were shocked by the behaviour of Hong Kong supporters at a match on Tuesday night, said Philippine new site ABS-CBN News.
Headlined “Azkals players, fans abused in Hong Kong”, the report painted some Hongkongers at Mong Kok Stadium acting as hooligans after Hong Kong lost, citing tweets from witnesses.
The South China Morning Post also talked to a witness who was disgusted by the “ugly scenes”.
On the other side of that story are people who say the foul language and bottle-throwing are just another day on the pitch.
The news coincides with the release of an opinion poll saying that Manila tops the list of governments that Hongkongers do not like.
An overwhelming 86 per cent of 1,000 people surveyed held negative feelings towards the Philippine government, according to a University of Hong Kong poll. By comparison, the next most-hated government, Japan, was at 48 per cent.
(The findings are surprising and worth looking at. For example, although nearly half of the respondents don’t like Japan’s government, 28 per cent like its people.)
The poll also might shed light on the racism debate that has taken a hold of Hong Kong since the Washington Post erroneously ranked the city as the most racist place in the world. The newspaper later revised their report after discovering data had been misinterpreted. Still, the self-reflective question lingers.
