Defective light bulb
Nine people have narrowly escaped injury from a defective light bulb that the Consumer Council says it is powerless to recall from sale.
Complaints about the Lion G-95mm Ball Lamp prompted the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department to test the product last year. Results showed the glass envelope of the 100 watt bulb detached from the screw cap before the end of its life.
Consumer Council community relations committee vice-chairman Michael Tsui Fuk-sun said the council had contacted the producer but 'they simply refused to take them off the market'.
'This isn't good enough . . . we strongly advise consumers not to use them.' Prosecution is in the hands of the government department. Its technical secretary, Frank Chan Fan, said the firm had since changed the product and produced a certificate of compliance.
